Lisbon à la Carte

It was from Lisbon that aromas and flavours came and went during the time when Portuguese sailors decided to cross the oceans to find new ocean trade routes: Through River Tagus came cargoes of salt, olive oil, wine, sugar, pepper, oranges, tea, andcinnamon.

It was due to the Master of the Kitchen of His Majesty Dom Pedro II that, at the end of the 18th Century, Portuguese gastronomy was perfected, leaving behind the exaggerations of the medieval times for more delicate tastes, with a preference for theexcellency of ingredients cooked in a simple and natural way to take full advantage of their nutrients and flavor.

Take your time enjoying the delicacies of Portuguese flavors, such as the "caldeiradas" (fish stew) and fresh fish soups, cooked with different kinds of fish, or the vegetables in season that are chosen in the market each morning or the exotic fruits that began arriving in Lisboa centuries ago and still do.

You must also try the rich sweet desserts, whose recipes have been developed by priests and nuns living in convents and are known as "conventual sweets". Main ingredients are eggs, sugar, and above all creativity. Some of these sweets still have names that remind you of who invented them: Toucinho do Céu (Heaven's Bacon, a delicious pudding), Barrigas de freira (Nuns' Bellies), Orelhas de Abade (Abbot's Ears) and Papos de Anjo (Angels' Bellies).
